On 26th August, Brigadier General H R McMaster, Director of Concept Development and Experimentation at the U.S. Army's Training and Doctrine Command spoke on “The US Army's Emerging Vision of Future Armed Conflict: hybrid threats; complex environments; uncertain conditions” From 2-3pm.
Brigadier General McMaster discussed the U.S. Army's Draft Capstone Concept. The Capstone Concept is an idealized vision of how the U.S. Army will conduct future operations as part of joint, interdepartmental, and multinational efforts to achieve policy goals. The concept is meant to drive innovation and force development to ensure that the U.S. Army is prepared for the challenges of future armed conflict.

Brigadier General H R McMaster, Director of Concept Development and Experimentation at the U.S. Army's Training and Doctrine Command, is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of the book Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam (1997), and among his many other publications is the 2003 monograph, Crack in the Foundation: Defense Transformation and the Underlying Assumption of Dominant Knowledge in Future War. Brigadier General McMaster served as an assistant professor of history at the U.S. Military Academy from 1994 to 1996. He is a senior consulting fellow at the IISS and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. McMaster joined US Central Command in May 2003, serving as Director, Commander's Advisory Group until May 2004. From June 2004 until June 2006, he served as the 71st Colonel of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. While in residence at the IISS from 2006 to 2008, he also served as Special Assistant to Commander, Multinational Force Iraq.
