18 March 2010 - Book Launch - 'The Future of Political Islam'

Roger Hardy, Middle East and Islamic Affairs Analyst, BBC launches his new book “The Future of Political Islam”

The IISS Middle East and Gulf Security Programme

On Thursday 18 March 2010 Roger Hardy, Middle East and Islamic Affairs Analyst, BBC will launch his new book “The Future of Political Islam” from 1-2pm.

Almost a decade on from 9/11, is the West winning or losing the 'war on terror'? Has Al-Qaeda lost the ideological battle, as some are claiming, or is this wishful thinking?

Roger Hardy has been a Middle East and Islamic affairs analyst with the BBC World Service for the last 25 years. He has written and presented a string of radio series about the politics of Islam, including Islam: Faith and Power, Waiting for the Dawn, Europe's Angry Young Muslims and, most recently, Jihad and the Petrodollar. In a new book -- The Muslim Revolt: A Journey through Political Islam, to be published by Hurst and Columbia University Press on 15 March -- he uses his travels and experiences as a journalist to attempt to explain a phenomenon that still seems to madden and mystify both the public and the policy-makers. His journey through the Muslim world takes in Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, South-East Asia, and Europe. Without a better grasp of Islamism and its discontents, he argues, the 'Muslim revolt' will continue for generations to come.

This meeting will be chaired by Dr Toby Dodge, Consulting Senior Fellow for the Middle East, IISS. It will take place on the Fourth Floor at Arundel House, Arundel House, 13–15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX.
