20 Mar 09 - Discussion Meeting - Bates Gill and Evan Medeiros

Bates Gill and Evan Medeiros

On Friday 20 March 2009, Evan Medeiros will speak on the RAND study “Pacific Currents” and Bates Gill on “Asia’s New Multilateralism” from 12-1:30pm.

Pacific Currents: The Response of U.S. Allies and Security Partners in East Asia to China's RiseChina's growing presence in East Asian economic, military, and diplomatic affairs has prompted concerns that China is eroding U.S. influence in the region. Dr Medeiros will discuss a new RAND Corporation report, Pacific Currents, which examines the responses of six U.S. allies and security partners in East Asia to China's rise: Australia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. The RAND Study found that none of the six countries see China as a viable strategic alternative to the United States and that the U.S. remains the security partner of choice. Yet, China's rise is changing the nature of U.S. alliances in the region. Most nations want U.S. involvement in the region to continue–but sometimes only in certain ways, at certain times, and on particular issues.

Asia’s New Multilateralism: Cooperation, Competition, and the Search for Community
The fifteen contributors to this volume, leading  experts from across the region, assess whether Asia’s emerging institutional architecture will move the region toward shared concepts of security, prosperity, and justice—or whether Asia’s future may in fact resemble its past.  Dr Gill will introduce the new book -- Asia’s New Multilateralism: Cooperation, Competition, and the Search for Community (Columbia University Press, 2009) --  and also highlight the major findings of the survey and the policy recommendations which flow from them.

Evan S. Medeiros is a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. He specializes in research on the international politics of East Asia, China’s foreign and national security policies and policymaking, U.S.-China relations and Chinese military issues. He recently served for a year as the Policy Advisor to the Special Envoy for China and the Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) at the Treasury Department, sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Bates Gill is the director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He previously held the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies and was a senior fellow in foreign policy studies and the inaugural director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution.
