12 Jun 2009 - Roundtable Discussion - “India's Northeast: Forgotten Insurgencies”

On Friday, 12th June Subir Bhaumik, BBC East & Northeast India Correspondent, based in Calcutta, will speak on “India's Northeast: Forgotten Insurgencies” from 12:30-130pm.

 

Subir Bhaumik is one of India's most experienced investigative journalists, with intimate knowledge of the insurgencies raging in South and Southeast Asia. He is also currently 2009 Eurasian fellow at Frankfurt University and a corporate risk analyst.
He is a former Queen Elizabeth House Fellow at Oxford University (1989-90) , during which he completed his first book" Insurgent Crossfire" that details the nation-state sponsorship of insurgencies in post-colonial South Asia.

 

Since then, he has written extensively on Northeast India, Bangladesh, Burma and the Himalayan countries of Nepal and Bhutan. His articles have appeared in at least twenty books edited by leading social scientists and foreign policy experts and he has presented papers at scores of seminars in India and abroad. He has lectured extensively in Indian and Western universities.

 

He is now promoting a unique concept of ethnic reconciliation in Northeast India, where conflicts between migrant and indigenous communities have scarred the region since Independence. He has recently completed a study on Indian policy on Northeast for the East-West Center, Washington DC. His next book "The Troubled Periphery: Crisis of India's Northeast " is being published by Sage.
