01 Apr 2009 - IISS Eurasia Security Seminars - 'The Implications of 2008 August War for Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Disappointment, Fears & Hopes'

On Wednesday, 1 April 2009, Mr. Stefan Safaryan, member of the Armenian National Assembly, will speak on 'The Implications of 2008 August War for Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Disappointments, Fears & Hopes' from 12:30-2 pm.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are still locked in the latent conflict over Nagorny-Karabakh. There is a perception that the August 2008 conflict in Georgia has highlighted that there is no military solution to this protracted regional conflict and therefore it might have created a new window of opportunity for conflict resolution in Nagorny-Karabakh. Ms. Safaryan will speak on the recent developments of Armenia-Russia-Azerbaijan triangle and explore whether new opportunities have emerged in the recent months. He will also speak on the dynamic in the conflict area  in light of the global economic crisis.

Mr. Stefan Safaryan is a member of the Armenian Parliament—the National Assembly—from the Heritage opposition party since 2007. He is a member of the standing committee on foreign relations and a member of the Armenian parliamentary delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC). From 2005 to 2007 Mr. Safaryan was the research director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies (ACNIS), the first independent think tank in Armenia founded by the first minister of foreign affairs. He was a senior analyst of political and security affairs at the same Center from 2001 to 2007.

The seminar will be chaired by Oksana Antonenko, Senior Fellow and Programme Director of Russia and Eurasia programme and will be held on the fourth floor of Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3D.
