On Thursday, 16 April 2009, Thomas de Waal, Research Associate on Caucasus, Conciliation Resources and Laurence Broers, Caucasus Projects Manager, Conciliation Resources, will speak on ‘Prospects of Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict’ from 12:30-20pm.
The unresolved conflict over Nagorny Karabakh continues to be one of the key issues of regional security in the South Caucasus. The parties of the conflict are caught in a ’Karabakh trap‘, where societies have been encouraged to have unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved and where compromise is fraught with risk. Thomas de Waal and Dr Laurence will analyse the current situation and identify the steps needed to move the peace process forward. Thomas de Wall recently wrote a report ’Karabakh trap‘, which presents an analysis of how the facts of the conflict are changing, of why the peace process is failing to move forward and the dangers that lie ahead over the next five to ten years. It is aimed at stimulating a debate about the long-term strategic options available to the parties involved in the conflict with the goal of helping to move forward a peaceful resolution.
Thomas de Waal is a writer and analyst. He is currently working on a book about the Caucasus for Oxford University Press and is a Research Associate with Conciliation Resources. He has worked as a journalist in London and Moscow for the BBC, the Moscow Times, The Times and the Economist and as Caucasus Editor for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. He is the co-author of Chechnya: A Small Victorious War (1997) and sole author of Black Garden: Armenia and Azerbaijan Through Peace and War (2003)
Dr. Laurence Broers is a Projects Manager for the Caucasus Programme at Conciliation Resources. Between 1997 and 2004 he completed doctoral studies in political science on Georgia, and also worked as one of the editors of the first comprehensive Georgian-English dictionary to be published since Georgian independence. He has published numerous articles on the politics of ethnicity and democratization in post- Soviet Georgia, and was editor of Conciliation Resources' 2006 publication on the Nagorny Karabakh peace process in its Accord series.
The seminar will be chaired by Oksana Antonenko, Senior Fellow and Programme Director of Russia and Eurasia programme and will be held on the fourth floor of Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3D.
