On Tuesday 7 October 2008, Dr. Elkhan Nuriyev, Director, The Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, will speak on ‘Azerbaijan and the European Union: Energy Security and Foreign Policy Strategies’ from 10-11:30am.
2008 is a crucial year for the future of Azerbaijan, which is going through a period of rapid change and development. There are important decisions to be made and challenges ahead. A new sense of confidence is also reflecting itself in the country's foreign policy strategy and its willingness to engage internationally on a number of issues. To review the situation in Azerbaijan in this important year and to look ahead to the next decade, Dr. Nuriyev will discuss issues such as Azerbaijan-EU relations, Caspian pipeline politics, energy security and foreign policy strategies.
Dr Elkhan Nuriyev assumed the directorship of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan in February 2008 after a career in government and academe. His immediate previous post was founding director of the Baku-based Center for International Studies(CIS). Before that, he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan from 1992 to 1994, first as senior expert in the International Relations Department, then as Foreign Policy Adviser in the Department for Europe, USA and Canada. He also served as J. William Fulbright Research Fellow at The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington, DC from 1996 to 1997.
