Fatmir Mediu

 

On Wednesday 5 March 2008, Mr Fatmir Mediu (Minister of Defence of the Republic of Albania) will lead a dicussion meeting on "Albanian Integration and Regional Security" from 1-2 pm.

 

Mr Fatmir Mediu was appointed Minister of Defence of the Republic of Albania in September 2005.

 

He started his political career when he joined the Republican Party in 1990.

 

In 1991, only one year after, he had already become one of the local leading figures of the Republican Party.  In 1992 he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Republican Party and in 1997 Chairman of the Republican Party. With his election in the Albanian Parliament in 2001, he began his parliamentarian career.   

 

He was first elected Chairman of the Republican Party’s Parliamentarian Group, then Chairman of the Parliamentarian Stability Pact and European Integration Ad Hoc Commission, Member of the Parliamentarian Commission for Legislation and Foreign Affairs, and Member of the Albanian Delegation to the European Parliament.

 

During the 2005 parliamentarian elections, Mr Mediu was re-elected Member of Parliament and in September 2005 he was appointed Minister of Defence of the Republic of Albania.

 

In the meantime, Mr Mediu has also been actively involved in several important organisations and foundations. He became President of “Building Democracy” Foundation (1998), Member of the International Foundation, Washington, DC (1999), Board Member of TRANDUZE organised by ASPIN, Berlin (1999), Member of the Parliamentarians for Global Action, New York (2002), and Member of the Executive Committee of East-West Parliamentarian Practice, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2001).

 

This meeting will be chaired by Dr Dana Allin (IISS Senior Fellow for Transatlantic Affairs; Editor of Survival) and will take place at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX.
