16 Jul 08 - Discussion Meeting - Missile Defence: Plans, Problems, Priorities

Panel Discussion on Missile Defence: Plans, Problems, Priorities

On Wednesday 16 July 2008, the IISS, supported by NATO, is hosting a panel discussion meeting on “Missile Defence: Plans, Problems, Priorities” from 6-8pm.

At the April 2008 summit in Bucharest, NATO allies acknowledged that planned but contentious European-based US missile defence assets would provide European allies with a significant capability to counter the threat of long-range ballistic missiles. With negotiations between the US and the intended hosts of parts of the system, the Czech Republic and Poland, drawing to a close, NATO is seeking to find ways in which the emerging US missile defence architecture can be linked to NATO’s own efforts in this area. In order to discuss the issues involved, the IISS is hosting a meeting exploring current US and NATO missile defence plans, including an analysis of negotiations among allies, the technical and political problems related to missile defence, and the priorities for the immediate future.

Moderated by Andrew Brookes, Aerospace Analyst at the IISS, the panel will include Brigadier William Mayville, Deputy Director for Strategic Planning and Policy, US EUCOM; Colonel Ludwig Decamps, Policy Planning Unit, Office of the Secretary General, NATO; Mr Piotr Pacholski, Director Missile Defence Office, Ministry of National Defence, Poland; and Mr Peter Chalupecky, Deputy Director Security Policy Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
