On Thursday 24 July 2008, Ambassador Gregory L Schulte, US Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency will speak on "The India Safeguards Agreement – Moving India towards the Nonproliferation Mainstream" from 10-11:30 am.
On August 1, the IAEA Board of Governors will consider a draft Safeguards Agreement for India. The agreement is the result of months of negotiations between India and the IAEA Secretariat, which has fully endorsed it. Critics fear, however, that the “India deal” is the top of a slippery slope that undermines the current nuclear nonproliferation regime. IISS is pleased to welcome Ambassador Schulte to provide a view from Vienna on the agreement and its global implications.
Ambassador Gregory L. Schulte serves as the Permanent Representative of the United States to the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Office in Vienna. He is charged with advancing the President's agenda in countering proliferation, terrorism, organized crime, and corruption, while promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Ambassador Schulte previously worked in the White House, Pentagon, and NATO Headquarters on nuclear policy, nuclear arms control and nonproliferation, and the Balkans.
This meeting will be Chaired by Mark Fitzpatrick, Senior Fellow for Non-Proliferation and will take place on the Fourth Floor at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX.
