On Monday 21 January 2008, Colonel Bart Howard (Assistant Chief of Staff of the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command TRADOC) will lead a disucssion meeting on the topic of "Observations on NATO-ISAF Operations in Afghanistan and Recommendations for Improving Multinational Operations" from 11.45 am - 1 pm.
Colonel Bart Howard enlisted as Infantryman in the US Army National Guard in 1981. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Santa Clara University in 1984 and was commissioned as an Armor Lieutenant and earned a Bachelor Degree in History. He holds a Master of Military Science from American Military University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College. His Military Education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Officer Advanced Course, US Army Command and General Staff College, Australian Army Command and Staff College and the US Army War College.
Colonel Howard has served in numerous command and staff positions to include: Tank Platoon Leader and Scout Platoon Leader, 5th Battalion 73rd Armor and Troop Executive Officer, 1st Battalion 10th Cavalry, 194th Armored Brigade, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Battalion Adjutant, 1st Battalion 72nd Armor, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; Assistant Brigade S3, 1st (Tiger) Brigade 2nd Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
During Operation Desert Shield and Storm, Colonel Howard commanded Bravo Company 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor, 1st (Tiger) Brigade. B Company spearheaded the assault of the Al Mutla Ridge outside Kuwait City and marked the link up of ARCENT and MARCENT forces. The company was later awarded the Draper Combat Leadership Award. Colonel Howard’s subsequent assignments include; Commander HHC, 3rd (Greywolf) Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division; Platoon Tactics Instructor, 2nd Squadron 16th Cavalry and Small Group Instructor, 3rd Squadron 16th Cavalry, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Regimental Adjutant, 1st Squadron Executive Officer and Regimental Executive Officer, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse), Fort Irwin, California; Armor Branch Assignment Officer and Executive Officer to the Commanding General, US Total Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Virginia. He commanded 1st Battalion, 34th Armor (Centurions) at Fort Riley, Kansas and in Kuwait as the Intrinsic Action Task Force Commander on 11 September 2001. He subsequently served as the Operations Officer (G3) of the 24th Infantry Division (M) and Commander of the 1st Brigade (Devil), 1st Infantry Division (M). He has served as the Chief of Staff, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan and as the Military Assistant to the NATO-ISAF Commander in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Colonel Howard’s awards and decorations include; Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Citation, NATO Medal and Airborne Badge. He is a member of the Order of Saint George, Saint Barbara and has been awarded the de Fleuy Medal.
