11 Feb 08 - Discussion Meeting - Air Commodore Paul Colley and Group Captain Ian Shields

Paul Colley and Ian Shields

On Monday 11 February 2008, Air Commodore Paul Colley (Director Air and Space at the DCDC) and Group Captain Ian Shields (Assistant Director DCDC) will lead a discussion group on the topic of "Space Security: The Importance to National Security" from 10.30 am - 12 noon.

Space capabilities have become vital to the UK, without many people realising just how much their daily lives are now intertwined with a domain that some still regard as the preserve of science fiction writers. Space security is not just military business: it impacts everybody. The IISS is hosting a discussion period on 11 February 2008 to expose some of the issues at stake. The MOD's Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre (DCDC) has kindly agreed to give a short presentation based on their current thinking, to be followed by questions. The two presenters are Air Commodore Paul Colley, Director Air and Space at the DCDC, and Group Captain Ian Shields, his Assistant Director. Both navigators, the Air Commodore has a background in Air Defence, commanded No 43 Squadron and RAF Cranwell and has recently returned from a NATO HQ in Portugal, where he commanded a Joint Task Force in Africa. The Group Captain's specialisation has been in Tactical Air Transport and he commanded No 47 Squadron; more recently he has completed an MPhil in International Relations at Cambridge.

This meeting will be chaired by Andrew Brookes and will take place on the Fourth Floor at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX.
