On Friday 22 February 2008, Field Marshal The Rt Hon Lord Inge, General Klaus Naumann and General Henk van den Breemen will lead a discussion meeting on "Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing Transatlantic Partnership" from 1-2 pm.
In a world of asymmetric threats and global challenges, governments and peoples are uncertain about what the threats are and how they should face a complicated world. No nation and no institution is capable of dealing with current and future problems on its own. An integrated and allied strategic approach is needed, including both military and non-military capabilities. Five former chiefs of defence staff, from France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and United States, are proposing a new strategy which could be adopted by organisations and nations. In “Towards a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing Transatlantic Partnership”, published by the Noaber Foundation, the authors consider options for implementation of the strategy, and propose an agenda for change.
Three of the authors will outline and discuss their proposal at this meeting. Field Marshal Lord Inge was Chief of the Defence Staff, United Kingdom; General Klaus Naumann was Chief of the Defence Staff, Germany and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee; and General Henk van den Breemen was Chief of the Defence Staff of the Netherlands. The other authors were General John Shalikashvili, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, United States and Admiral Jacques Lanxade, former Chief of the Defence Staff, France.
The meeting will be Chaired by Alex Nicoll (IISS Director of Editorial) and will be held on the Fifth Floor at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX.
