6 Nov 07 - Discussion Meeting - Dr Philip H Gordon

On Tuesday 6 November 2007, Dr Philip H Gordon (Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy, Brookings Institution, Washington DC) will launch his new book entitled Winning the Right War: The Path to Security for America and the World (Times Books, 2007) from 11 am -12 noon.
Winning the Right War has been described as “an absolutely brilliant book . . . the most clearly argued critique yet of the Bush administration’s flawed approach to defeating jihadist terrorism” (Peter Bergen); and “a clear vision…wise advise on how to think about the threats and challenges facing the United States in the wake of the Iraq disaster.”  (Francis Fukuyama) and “…prudent, deeply informed, and workable…The next administration would be wise to take this strategy as a starting point for the way forward.” (Steven Simon). The Financial Times has said that “the neo-conservatives, who pressed so hard for the war in Iraq, loved to speak of the need for ‘moral clarity’ in the framing of foreign policy. Philip Gordon . . . offers something that is even more valuable: intellectual clarity.”

Philip Gordon is Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, in Washington DC, where he has worked since 2000. Prior to coming to Brookings he served on President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council staff and has previously held teaching and research posts at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington DC; INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France and Singapore; and the German Society for Foreign Affairs in Bonn.

Dr Gordon is a regular commentator in international affairs and US foreign policy for major television and radio networks and a frequent contributor to the op-ed pages of major publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, New Republic, and Le Monde.

An adapted chapter from Winning the Right War will appear in the Winter 2007-2008 issue of Survival.

This meeting will be chaired by Dana Allin (IISS Senior Fellow for Transatlantic Affairs) and will take place on the Fourth Floor at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London, WC2R 3DX.
