On Thursday 24 May 2007 H.E. Ambassador Farooq Sobhan, Special Envoy to the Chief Advisor, Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, will lead a discussion on "Regional Responses to Terrorism: Bangladesh's Perspective" from 4-5pm.
H.E. Ambassador Farooq Sobhan is the Special Envoy to the Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. Earlier, in a distinguished diplomatic career he was the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh (1995-1997), High Commissioner to India (1992-1995), Ambassador to China (1987-1991), High Commissioner to Malaysia (1984-1987) and Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1981-1984). At the United Nations, he also served as the Chairman of the Group of 77 (1982-1983). In 1997-1999, Ambassador Sobhan was the Executive Chairman, Board of Investment & Special Envoy to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Ambassador Sobhan is also the President and Chief Executive of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), an independent think tank in Dhaka. He is a Member of the International Research Committee of the Centre for Security Studies in Colombo and a Member of the Board of Governors of the South Asia Centre for Policy Studies (SACEPS) in Kathmandu. He was the Co-Chairman of the Coalition for South Asian Cooperation (CASAC) from 1994-2001. Ambassador Sobhan has written extensively on regional cooperation in South Asia and is currently involved in a number of initiatives in the region.
