22 Mar 07 - Discussion Meeting - Ms Oksana Antonenko, Dr Eugene Rumer, Col (retd) Christopher Langton and Mr Vadim Kononenko

On Thursday 22 March 2007, the IISS will hold a discussion meeting on "Russia & the West: A Cold Peace?" from 10-11.30am.
Relations with Russia and the West have taken a turn for the worse in recent months, with official statements over defence, energy and politics rekindling thoughts of a cold peace, if not a return to the cold war.  What direction is Russia heading as the country begins to prepare for a successor to Vladimir Putin?  Can Russia and Europe reach a modus vivendi on oil and gas supply?  What are the risks inside Russia and between Russia, Europe and the United States?  How serious are concerns over military developments, including alliances and missile defences?  How does recent Russia foreign and security policy look from the vantage point of smaller European states like Finland?  These and other topics will be addressed in an open forum by four distinguished specialists at the IISS:

Ms Oksana Antonenko
IISS Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia

Dr Eugene Rumer
Visiting Senior Fellow, IISS

Col (Retd) Christopher Langton
IISS Senior Fellow for Conflict and Defence Diplomacy

Mr Vadim Kononenko
Visiting Fellow from the Finnish Institute for International Affairs
Please reply to Caitlin Brannan at brannan@iiss.org if you would like to attend.

This meeting will take place in the 5th Floor Meeting Room, Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, London, WC2R 3DX
