On Tuesday 13 March 2006 Charles Reed and David Ryall will launch their new book, The Price of Peace: Just War in the Twenty-First Century, from 2-4pm.
The just war tradition is under stress. US initiatives, such as extraordinary rendition and military pre-emption, challenge long-held norms concerning the morality of war. George W. Bush and John Reid recently expressed doubts about the contemporary applicability of the Third Geneva Convention, initiating a broader discussion of the norms which regulate when and how states go to war.
In response to this debate, the Church of England and the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales have assembled a new publication entitled The Price of Peace: Just War in the Twenty-First Century, bringing together the considered views of an impressive group of churchmen, politicians, military experts, civil servants, philosophers, and lawyers. The book examines how the just war tradition can be reworked to respond to new challenges to international security posed by non-state actors and weak states.
The meeting is to be chaired by Dr Patrick Cronin, Director of Studies, IISS, and Charles Reed of the Church of England.
The speakers will include:
Lord Wallace of Saltaire, former Director of the Royal Institute for International Affairs
Sir Michael Quinlan, formerly of the Ministry of Defence
Paul Schulte of the UK Defence Academy
Professor Gwyn Prins of the London School of Economics
David Ryall of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales
There will be time for questions and discussion.
This meeting will take place at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, WC2R 3DX and will start at 2pm, to last two hours. Copies of the book in paperback will be available for purchase at a discount.
