On Tuesday 17 July 2007 Mr Hameed Haroon, Chief Executive Officer & Publisher, Herald Publications & Pakistan Herald Limited, Pakistan, will give an address on "Pakistan: Politics, Media & Conflict in an Election Year" from 12 noon - 1pm.
Mr Hameed Haroon is Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of Herald Publications & Pakistan Herald Limited. The Herald Group publishes Pakistan’s largest English language newspaper, The Dawn, from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The internet edition of Dawn is considered to be the most frequently accessed website on Pakistan. In addition, the Herald Group publishes Karachi’s leading English evening paper, The Star, and the prestigious magazine, The Herald. The Herald Group is also instrumental in establishing Pakistan’s first English language television channel, The Dawn News.
Mr Haroon studied at the London School of Economics and Harvard University. Early in his career, he was a presenter on an investigative program on Channel 4, and worked as an underground correspondent for the Guardian newspaper in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province during the insurgency in the mid-seventies.
Mr Haroon has been Vice Chairman of the Press Institute of Pakistan (PIP) (1986-95), the Secretary General of All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS) (1984-86), and is currently the President of APNS. In 2004, he was decorated with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz civilian award by the Government of Pakistan for his promotion of art and culture; in 2006, the Italian government conferred on him the Order of Merit for one of the “most outstanding public personalities” in Pakistan.
Mr Hameed Haroon is also a member of the Citizens Group on Electoral Process, constituted by the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) which will monitor the national elections in late 2007/early 2008.
