On Wednesday 18 July 2007 Karel Schwarzenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Czech Republic, addressed the IISS on "New Threats and the Transatlantic Bond" from 1pm.

Karel Schwarzenberg studied Law and Silviculture Studies at the Universities of Vienna, Munich and Graz before assuming the administration of family estates in Austria and Bavaria.  He was the President of the International Helsinki Committee for Human Rights and was jointly awarded the 1989 Human Rights Award of the Council of Europe with Lech Walesa.  
 
In 1990 he became a Member of the Collegium of Counsellors of President Václav Havel and Chancellor of President Václav Havel from July 1990 to July 1992.  In 2004 he became a Senator of the Parliament of the Czech Republic representing the 6th election district as well as a Member of the EU Affairs Committee of the Senate and a Member of the Permanent Delegation of the Parliament to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.  From 2006 he became the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security Committee of the Senate and Member of the Permanent Delegation of the Parliament to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly before becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
