18 Apr 07 - Discussion Meeting - Mr Stuart Levey

On Wednesday 18 April 2007 Mr Stuart Levey, U.S. Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, will lead a discussion meeting on 'Proliferation Financing' from 12 noon - 1.30pm.
Mr Levey will talk about nuclear and ballistic missile proliferation and the financial sector.  He will speak on how countries seeking nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them employ deceptive practices to finance their proliferation activities, and the risks that private businesses should consider when dealing with Iran and North Korea.  This meeting, which will be off-the-record, is targeted for stakeholders in the financial sector.

Since July 2004, Mr Levey has served as the Department of the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. In the role of Under Secretary, Mr Levey directs the Treasury’s efforts to cut the lines of financial support to international terrorists and to combat the financial underpinnings of proliferation networks.  Mr Levey also focuses on protecting the integrity of the financial system, fighting financial crime, and enforcing economic sanctions. He also oversees the Treasury Department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis.

Before taking up his Treasury position, Mr Levey served as the Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice. In that capacity, he was the Deputy Attorney General’s primary staff member with responsibility for coordinating the Justice Department’s varied counterterrorism activities, including investigations, intelligence collection and prosecutions.   Prior to joining the Justice Department in 2001, Mr Levey spent 11 years in private practice at the Washington law firm Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin LLP (which merged into Baker Botts, LLP).  He also clerked for Judge Laurence Silberman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit from 1989 through 1990.
