23 Mar 06 - Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Anniversary Seminar

On Tuesday 21 March 2006, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists will hold its 60th Anniversary Seminar
on “Science, ethics and security in a changing world”. The speakers will be:
  • Baroness Onora O'Neill of Bengarve, former Chair of Nuffield Council on Bioethics
  • Dr Mary Midgley, author of Science As Salvation
  • Professor Robert A. Hinde CBE, FRS, FBA, St John's College, Cambridge

Founded by nuclear scientists in Chicago in December 1945, the Bulletin of the Atomic Sciences has kept watch on scientific developments and security for more than 60 years. The iconic ‘Doomsday Clock’ became the world’s most recognisable symbol of humanity’s potential for global destruction, as it tracked the nuclear age in terms of Minutes to Midnight. The security environment is different now, with challenges from the biosciences and uses of outer space raising as profound questions as nuclear physics.

IISS and the Bulletin are jointly hosting this seminar with three of Britain's most eminent philosophers and scientists to consider the science and security challenges of the next 60 years.

Professor Onora O’Neill is Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge. A former Chair of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Human Genetics Advisory Commission, she sits in the House of Lords as Baroness O’Neill of Bengarve.

Dr Mary Midgley is an eminent philospher and author, whose special interests are in science, ethics and humanity’s relationship with nature.

Professor Robert Hinde is Chair of the British Pugwash Group. A former RAF pilot, he is a highly acclaimed behavioural scientist, and has written recently on the causes of war.

Refreshments will be served at 4pm. The seminar will last for 2 hours from 4.30-6.30pm.

This event is being held at Arundel House, 13-15 Arundel Street, Temple Place, London WC2R 3DX. If you would to attend this event,  R.S.V.P by March 21 to Marina Vaughan on e-mail: vaughan@iiss.org or tel: 020 7395 9153.
