On Friday 18 November 2005 the Honorable Patrick Cronin gave a talk on 'US Foreign Policy: New Themes for the Bush Administration' exclusively for Corporate and Institutional Members of the IISS. The meeting began at 10.30am, although tea and coffee were served from 10am with a Q & A session from 11.15am. The meeting will concluded at 12 noon.
The meeting will be addressed by the Honorable Patrick Cronin, recently arrived as Director of Studies at the IISS. Dr. Cronin was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate to the third-ranking post at the U.S. Agency for International Development—Assistant Administrator, Policy and Program Coordination.  He has served as a Director of Studies at three different think tanks in Washington, D.C.: the National Defence University’s Institute for National Strategic Studies, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and, most recently, at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.  In addition, Dr. Cronin was a senior analyst at the Centre for Naval Analyses, as well as a U.S. Naval Reserve officer.  He has also worked at the Congressional Research Service and SRI International.  He was the founding executive editor of Joint Forces Quarterly and associate editor of Strategic Review.  He has taught at Georgetown University’s Security Studies Program, the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, and the University of Virginia Woodrow Wilson Department of Government. 
 
He received his master’s degree at Oxford in 1982 and his doctorate there in 1984.  His major publications include The United States and Coercive Diplomacy; The U.S.-Japan Alliance: Past Present and Future; 2015: Power and Progress, and From Globalism to Regionalism: New Perspectives on American Foreign and Defence Policies,  as well as numerous articles in learned journals.
