On Wednesday 6th July 2005 Dr Ali Ansari, Reader in the School of History, University of St Andrews, spoke on "Iran: Prospects after the Presidential Elections". This event will be held between 10.45am and 11.45am.
Dr Ali Ansari is Reader in the School of History at the University of St Andrews where he specializes in the political history of the modern Middle East, looking in particular at the development of the state in the context of Western intervention, colonization and empire. The focus of his research is modern Iran where he has looked at the tension between traditional and modern structures and the means by which political leaders have sought to manage the transition. His current research falls into three main areas: the process of democratisation; myth and history; and interactions with the West.
 
His publications include Iran, Islam & Democracy - The Politics of Managing Change RIIA, London, 2000 pp 240 (2004) and The History of Modern Iran 1921: the Pahlavis & After Longman, Pearson Education, London, 2003, pp 272.
