On Tuesday 28 September Dr Michael Wheeler gave a talk on "National security and the American presidential campaign".
Dr Michael Wheeler is Director of the Center for Nuclear History Studies and Senior Defense Analyst at the Strategies Group, SAIC, Virginia. His areas of expertise include: national security strategy, nuclear strategy and arms control, missile defense, nuclear nonproliferation, intelligence, international law of armed conflict and just war theory.
Dr Wheeler is a Member of the Strategic Advisory Group, US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), the Director’s Review Committee for the Defense and Nuclear Technologies Directorate at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Defense Science Board Task Force on Missile Defense Phase IV.
Previously he worked on the Defense Science Board Task Force on Future Strategic Strike and the National Nuclear Security Agency Advisory Committee.
From 1989-1990 Dr Wheeler worked as Arms Control Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and retired from the US Air Force out of this position, after 24 years active duty, at rank of Colonel before becoming Staff Director at the Commission on Maintaining U.S. Nuclear Weapons Expertise.
Dr Wheeler has also worked as Chief of the Nuclear Negotiations Division, Joint Staff and Director of Operations, Minuteman III Missile Wing.
His published works include numerous monograph-length essays and book chapters on strategic issues relating to nuclear history, strategy, arms control, and non-proliferation.
Dr Wheeler has a Ph.D in Philosophy and an M.A. in Political Science.
