8 Sep 04 - Discussion Meeting - Euvgen Marchuk

On Wednesday 8 September Euvgen Marchuk, Minister of Defence of the Ukraine, gave a talk on the "Ukrainian contribution to the international security".
 
In his talk Minister Euvgen Marchuk covered the key priorities of defence reform in the Ukraine. He also discussed Ukraine’s relations with NATO as the Ukrainian government has declared its intension to join. Moreover, the role of the Ukraine, as a Black Sea country, has been enhanced within NATO’s PFP following the Istanbul summit. Mr. Marchuk also spoke about the Ukrainian experience in Iraq, a country which has over 1500 troops there, serving alongside Polish and other international forces. Click on the link at the bottom of the page for the full text of his speech.
 
Euvgen Marchuk was appointed the Minister of Defence of the Ukraine on 25 June 2003. He is also a Chairman of the Ukrainian Transport Union.
 
Prior to that he was Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council and was personally involved in the development and conception of the Euro-Atlantic Integration of the Ukraine, which was adopted in May 2002.
 
Between 1998 and 1999 Mr Marchuk was Head of the Parliament’s Committee on Social Policy and Labour and before that he was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament (Verhovna Rada) where he became a member of the Defence and Security Committee.
 
In June 1994 he was elected Vice-Prime Minister, first Vice-Prime Minister and finally Prime Minister of the Ukraine from 1995-1996.
 
When Ukraine acquired independence in 1991 he was appointed State Minister of Ukraine with specific responsibility for Defence, National Security and Emergency Situations and he became Head of the Ukrainian Security Service between 1991 and 1994.
 
Mr Marchuk joined the Ukrainian branch of the State Security Service (former KGB) in 1963 where he remained until 1988. His last position was First Deputy Head of the State Security Service of the Ukrainian Socialist Republic.
