On Thursday 22 July 2004 Mr Mikhail Margelov, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, talked at a Eurasia Strategy Seminar on "Russia's Foreign Policy Priorities".

Mr Margelov is one of the leading experts and influential politician in Russia. In his talk Mr. Margelov will discuss touch upon various aspects of Russian foreign policy including Middle East and Iraq, US-Russian relations on the eve of the forthcoming US presidential elections and Russian relations with CIS states.
In December 2000, Mr Margelov was elected to represent Pskov region in the Federation Council (the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament), where he joined the Committee for Foreign Affairs and in November 2001 he was elected as Chairman of this committee. Mr. Margelov is Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. From January until March 2000, Mr Margelov served as a consultant to Vladimir Putin’s Electoral Headquarters where he was specifically responsible for relations with the foreign media.
From its creation in October 1999 until autumn of 2000 Mr Margelov was a director of the Russian Information Center (Rosinformcentr). The Centre was established as a governmental agency to cover events in the Northern Caucasus, as well as for general coverage of internal political events. From May 1998 to September 1999 he held a managerial position at RIA-Novosti Information Agency. Mr Margelov was also head of the Public Relations Department in the Administration of the Russian President from November 1996. Earlier, he was with President Boris Yeltsin’s 1996 re-election campaign headquarters as chief coordinator for advertising.
