On 25 February 2004 Brigadier Brian Parritt and Commander Rodney Craig spoke at a public discussion meeting entitled 'Maritime & Port Security - The Rising Threat'. This event was introduced by Colonel Christopher Langton, Head of the Defence Analysis Department.
Brian Parritt served for thirty-seven years in the British Army, culminating in five years as Director of the Intelligence Corps. In 1999 he was selected to be a Governor of the United States Maritime Security Committee. Prior to that he was a joint signatory with H.M. Customs & Excise to a Memorandum of Understanding in the fight against illegal drugs. In 1994 he was elected a Companion of the Nautical Institute.In 1986, he participated in the series of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) meetings, which resulted in the unanimous adoption of the United Nations policy document Guidelines to Prevent Illegal Acts at Sea. Between 1981 and 1985 he was an Aide de Camp to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 1991 he was asked by the Nautical Institute to write the book Security at Sea,which is a practical guide for Masters to help them deal with terrorism, drugs and piracy. The book includes a foreword by the Secretary General of the IMO. Other publications include Stowaways at Sea,Crime at Sea, and Illegal Drugs at Sea.
Rodney Craig, Defence Analyst at the IISS, is a retired Royal Navy Commander, a former Principal Warfare [operations] Officer, and a specialist in anti-surface and anti-air warfare. His Service appointments before leaving the RN were with the Senior British Military Adviser attached to HQ US CENTRAL COMMAND in Tampa, Florida (2002), secondment to the Cabinet Office in the UK Joint Intelligence Organisation (strategic political analyst on Russian Federation and FSU) (1999-2002), and on the UK MOD Central Staff as the Naval operational policy and doctrine lead (1997-99). Earlier appointments included the UK/Netherlands [NATO] Amphibious Force as Chief of Staff, UK Fleet Headquarters as Commander Above Water Warfare, as well as numerous seagoing appointments including warship command.
