- 22 May 2012 - Discussion Meeting - The Poetry of the Taliban
The poetry of the Taliban, treated by many analysts as mere propaganda, is a prominent part of how they present themselves to the Afghan population. Felix Kuehn and Alex Strick van Linschoten have collected over 200 poems drawing upon Afghan legend and recent history as well as upon a long tradition of Persian, Urdu and Pashto verse. They will discuss their book 'The Poetry of the Taliban' on Tuesday 22 May 2012, 12:30-1:30pm.
- 25 May 2012 - Discussion Meeting - International Cyber Norms and their Role in Cyber Security and Defence
The need to stabilize international relations in cyberspace has become ever more pressing since the UN General Assembly, in 2010, called upon its member states to discuss international cyber norms. In this talk Dr Roger Hurwitz will review six areas of cyber behaviour, such as military operations and cybercrime, where norms, in the sense of shared expectations, could help stabilize international relations in cyberspace. The meeting will take place on Friday 25 May from 12:30-1:30pm.

The IISS-Middle East Ambassadors Forum in the UAE will take place on Sunday 27 May at the Dubai Capital Club. The Honourable Michael H Corbin, US Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, has agreed to be the guest speaker at this inaugural meeting.

Such systems help warn of natural disasters, facilitate global navigation and communications, and expand our scientific frontiers. Frank A. Rose, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Space and Defense Policy, will discuss recent diplomatic efforts to help maintain the long-term sustainability, safety, stability and security of outer space on Wednesday 30 May 2012, 10:30-11:30am.
