IISS Fullerton Lecture Friday 17 November 2017, 06:00 - 07:00 PM SGT

CANCELLED - Going global vs staying local: Romania’s agenda as a connector between Europe and Asia

NATO Secretary General and Foreign Minister of Romania

Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled.

Romania is a relatively new member of both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union, and is located on the latter’s eastern frontier. A midsize European country with one of the fastest growing economies on the continent for the past seven years, Romania acknowledges the special importance of being part of important international economic flows as an efficient way to secure its long-term sustainable development. Minister Meleşcanu will present his country’s priorities pinned to the global context and will explain in detail Romania’s potential role in building better and mutually beneficial connections between Europe and Asia.

Special attention will be paid to the opportunities that Romania and Singapore – geographically distant but like-minded in their political and economic choices – have for expanding their cooperation in various areas and thus jointly to add value to the ties between the two continents they belong to and to the fundamentals of a stable and peaceful world order.

HE Teodor Viorel Meleşcanu has been Romania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs since January 2017, and is Senator for Prahova constituency. In his earlier career (1966–90) a professional diplomat, his subsequent appointments have included Minister for Defence (2007–08), Interim Minister for Justice (2008), Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (2012–14), and State Advisor on defence and security in the chancellery of the Prime Minister (2015).

His academic qualifications include a PhD in International Law from the University of Geneva. He has published extensively on international relations and has been Professor at the doctoral school of the National School of Political Sciences and Public Administration in Bucharest since 2013.

As places are limited, we would appreciate your early response.
