Research Associate, IISS-Middle East

Main responsibilities: Heba is a Research Associate focusing on the Middle East. She writes for the Armed Conflict Database and Armed Conflict Survey, covering Sinai/Egypt, Iraq and Yemen, but she has also contributed to other IISS publications, such as Strategic Survey. Her research interests include political economy and minority groups, particularly in the context of armed conflict. 

Background: Heba is a DPhil Candidate at St Antony’s College at the University of Oxford. Her dissertation analyses the politics of economic engagement and disengagement in Israel/Palestine. She completed an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies with distinction at Oxford in 2013. Heba has worked on the Armed Conflict Database in various capacities since 2013. Previously, she contributed to research at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington DC and the League of Arab States in Cairo.
