Douglas Barrie

Senior Fellow for Military Aerospace

Main Responsibilities: Working within the Defence and Military Analysis Programme, Douglas Barrie is responsible for ensuring the quality of the Institute’s military aerospace analysis and the information on air power capabilities presented in the flagship Military Balance publication. He is also responsible for the formulation and execution of research projects in his areas of expertise. In tandem with his colleagues in the Programme, Douglas contributes to other IISS publications, databases and conference activities, as well as taking a prominent role in the work of other research programmes and strengthening the Institute’s networks among defence ministries, air forces and defence industries.

Background: Before joining the institute, Douglas Barrie was from 2002 the London bureau chief for Aviation Week & Space Technology. Previous professional positions include European editor of Defense News, defence aviation editor for Flight International, and deputy news editor for Jane’s Defence Weekly. His areas of interest include Russian and Chinese air power, and guided weaponry. He studied at Edinburgh University and holds an MA (Hons) in English Language and Literature.
