Presented by heads of government, ministers, business leaders, and journalists, the IISS-Oberoi Lecture series comprises four lectures a year, addressing questions of foreign policy, defence and national-security strategy and geo-economics, among others.

Heizo Takenaka

'Abenomics' and the resurgence of Japan's economy

Japan's new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, has impressed financial markets with a strong stimulus package - nicknamed 'Abenomics' - designed to revive his country's economy and end nearly 20 years of stagflation. But can the planned measures really succeed?

World-renowned economist Dr Heizo Takenaka served as a finance minister under former PM Junichiro Koizumi from 2001-05, crucially helping to restore confidence in Japan's banking system. Takenaka is now one of Abe's key economic advisers. Here he sets out the new government's policy.
