Press Coverage 2010

  • 20 January 2011 - - Financial Times - Beijing's foreign policy Shangri-La Dialogue 2010Beijing has made much, too, of its supposedly non-expansionary nature. General Ma Xiaotian last year quoted Mao Zedong saying: Fifty years from now, Chinas territory will remain 9,600,000 square kilometres ... Should we seize one inch of land from others, we would make ourselves aggressors.
  • 16 September 2010 - - US Senate Armed Services Committee - Testimony on the current security situation on the Korean Peninsula Shangri-La Dialogue 2010In this regard, I want to read from, I thought, a great statement that Secretary Gates made at the Shangri-La Conference in Singapore last year. And I quote, "I think that everyone in the room is familiar with the tactics that the North Koreans use. They create a crisis, and the rest of us pay a price to return to the status quo ante. As the expression goes into the United States, I'm tired of buying the same horse twice," end quote.
  • 25 August 2010 - - National Review - Evaluating China's Military Strength Shangri-La Dialogue 2010When it comes to China, this administration seems to be pulled in two directions. It spent much of 2009 trying to reassure China that the U.S. welcomes its rise; the White Houses handling of the report was one effort in that broader campaign. At the same time, there has been the occasional glimpse of a more confrontational approach to Beijing: Secretary Clintons Internet-freedom speech, arms sales to Taiwan, Secretary Gatess remarks at the International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia Security Summ
  • 25 July 2010 - - Arms Control Wonk - Patience is Virtue Shangri-La Dialogue 2010There is an interesting question about the best time to release the report. The 2006 and 2007 reports were released immediately prior to the IISS Shangri-la Dialogue, which DOD didnt like. DOD made a deliberate effort in 2008 and 2009 to issue the report early in March so that the diplomatic fallout was ancient history by the time Gates was sipping a Singapore Sling with his Asian counterparts. It is not the Chinese side that has set obstacles to military-to-military ties, General Ma Xiaotian, deput
  • 05 July 2010 - - ABS CBN News - Europe and Asia as global security actors Shangri-La Dialogue 2010Meanwhile, Pax Americana continues to reign supreme in Asia, a region fraught with historical grievances and ongoing tensions. However, Japan, China, India and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are seeking to tackle regional and global security challenges through an array of pan-regional organisations and alliances, including the Asean Regional Forum (ARF), the East Asia Summit and the informal Shangri-La Dialogue that meets every year in Singapore to discuss security questi
