Terrorism in Asia and how best to stop the spread of nuclear weapons are among the issues expected to surface at a conference that Sen. Fred Thompso, R-Tenn., is attending in Singapore.

“This will be an opportunity for us to reiterate our support for our allies in the Asia-Pacific region who are helping in the war on terrorism and to share ideas about the future of that effort,” Sen. Thompson said.

The conference, which begins today and ends Sunday, is sponsored by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.  It is expected to include U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, British Defense Secretary Geoffrey Hoon, India’s Defense Minister George Fernandes and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.

Sen. Thompson said the conference is particularly important in light of post-Sept. 11 efforts to combat terrorism.  Topics include managing terror threats and U.S. strategy in the region.

Sen. Thompson is the senior Republican on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee.  He is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and has been active in the areas of national security and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
