Dr John Chipman is Director-General and Chief Executive of the IISS. John conceived and launched the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore and the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain, as well as the Bahrain Global Forum, the IISS geo-economic forum. He founded Strategic Comments, a series of analyses on breaking strategic issues. John came to the IISS in 1983 and later held the position of Director of Studies before assuming the Directorship in 1993.
