On Sunday in Bahrain, Gen. David H. Petraeus, head of American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the problems in Pakistan brought “new urgency” to finding alternate supply routes through the “stans” of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) director-general and chief executive Dr John Chipman said it had made a valuable contribution to improving security and strengthening ties between the participating countries.
"Greater efforts are and will be made by key states in the region, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, to develop accountable and effective armed forces of their own," he said as he officially closed the three-day summit, at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa.

A supply line to Afghanistan, including access to railroads and air corridors, is “realistic”, Mikhail Margelov, the chairman of the Russian Federal Council’s foreign affairs committee, said on the sidelines of the fifth regional security summit in Bahrain, known as The Manama Dialogue.
Russia also wants to “move forward” with the United States and co-operate with the new administration on Iran, Mr Margelov said.

Addressing the Manama Dialogue, a regional security conference in the Bahraini capital, Shaikh Khalid said that the creation of the forum stemmed from a "firm conviction in the importance of dialogue and enhanced cooperation."

Mr Hasan made the comments during a session about the role of the international community in regional security at the Manama Dialogue.
Prime ministers, national security advisers, intelligence chiefs and military officials from around the world attended the three-day event, which concluded at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa. Delegations from 25 countries took part in the conference, organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

In Bahrain, however, Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh insisted that the timelines in the agreement were firm and that Iraq would be capable of providing for its own defense.
Saleh, a Kurdish politician, said extremist groups should not think Iraq's government will be vulnerable after the Americans have gone.
