Petraeus, head of American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the problems in Pakistan brought “new urgency” to finding alternate supply routes through the “stans” of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Russia also wants to “move forward” with the United States and co-operate with the new administration on Iran, Mr Margelov said.

Saleh, a Kurdish politician, said extremist groups should not think Iraq's government will be vulnerable after the Americans have gone.
