The IISS Middle East Lecture Series is a cycle of  high profile lectures examining topics dominating Middle Eastern politics. Each meeting comprises a lecture followed by an informal question and answer session, attended by 50-70 experts from government ministries and organisations, think-tanks, academia, media, NGOs and business leaders.

On Thursday 15 October 2009, H E Dr Sami Khiyami, Syrian Ambassador to the UK, spoke on ‘Syria: Cornerstone of a New Regional Context’ .

 

 

 

 

 

 

H E Dr Sami Khiyami presented a timely analysis on Syria and its role as a key player in the Middle East. Situated in the crux of a region that continues to be a focus of world affairs, Syria’s increasing regional diplomatic initiatives and relations with its neighbours are significant to future stability. In a 30 minute lecture, H E Dr Sami Khiyami discssed the prospects of a regional understanding between Turkey, Iran, Syria and Iraq and the impact this will have on shaping the geo-political and economic landscape of the region.

Manama Dialogue 2009 - the 6th IISS Regional Security Summit

Robert Gates, US Secretary of Defense adresses the 1st Plenary Session of the 2008 Manama Dialogue

The IISS will convene the 6th Regional Security Summit: The Manama Dialogue, from 11 to 13 December 2009.

 

Organised annually, the IISS Manama Dialogue provides a forum for the national security establishments of the participating states to exchange views on regional security challenges. It is a unique forum in that it is made up of governmental delegations from over 20 countries, including not only the states of the region and the immediate neighbourhood, but also the outside powers with security interests in the Gulf.
