Geopolitics and global economics are today more interdependent than ever before. For a global investor, strategist, CEO, policy-maker or politician, understanding how today’s geopolitical shifts create tomorrow’s economic risks and opportunities – and vice versa – is essential. Strategic developments, including international political tensions, resource competition, arms races and conflict, can constraint the scope for economic development, the effective management of the international economic system, and the efficiency of trade, investment and business regimes.
These interactions at the nexus of economics and global security are captured in the term ‘Geo-economic Strategy’ used by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). From economic sanctions to sovereign risk, currency union to piracy, trade to development, and global governance to state capitalism- each of these global economic challenges have geopolitical roots and geopolitical consequences.
The Bahrain Global Forum, launched in 2010, brings together annually the world’s leading financial and economic actors with strategists and policymakers from the world of national security and defence. The Forum seeks to apply the perspectives and analyses of its unique mix of world-class participants to inform what eventually may become a “Bahrain consensus” on policies to promote global economic growth, development and security.
THE BAHRAIN GLOBAL FORUM 6-8 MAY 2011
Owing to developments in the Kingdom of Bahrain over the last several weeks the IISS, in close consultation with the relevant authrorities in Bahrain, has decided to cancel the Bahrain Global Forum 2011 that had been scheduled to take place 6-8 May 2011.
The international and Bahraini staff in the IISS-Middle East Office in Bahrain continue to work hard on the many projects that the IISS is undertaking in and on the region. Their factual and objective analysis of the trends in the region, like those of the IISS as a whole, are in great demand and the Institute looks forward to continuing to develop its work and activities in the Middle East.
The IISS wants to thank the many delegates from all over the world, drawn from government, business, international financial institutions, academia and journalism who had confirmed their interest in attending the Bahrain Global Forum and we will continue to stay in touch on our activiites and work in the Middle East and globally.
IISS 21 March 2011.
