Current projects: Security and counter-terrorist policies in Russia and Eurasia, frozen conflicts in the South Caucasus (Georgian-South Ossetian Dialogue on conflict resolution), the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, and security in Central Asia.
Background: Oksana Antonenko is a Senior Fellow and the Programme Director for Russia and Eurasia at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Ms. Antonenko holds degrees from Moscow State University in Political Economy and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government (USA) MPP in International Affairs and Security.
Her current areas of research include: Central Asia and Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, Protracted regional conflicts in Eurasia, Security Challenges in the North and South Caucasus, EU-Russian relations and Russia’s domestic evolution.
Ms. Antonenko joined the IISS in 1996 as Research Associate. From 1998-2000, Ms Antonenko was the Director of the IISS research and seminar programme on military reform in Russia and the CIS, focusing among other issues on the foreign assistance to Russia for re-training and resettlement of redundant officers. In 1999-2003 Ms. Antonenko headed a research and seminar programme on Russia’s regional perspective on foreign and security policy focusing on Russia’s relations with Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. In 2004-2005 Ms. Antonenko worked on a research project on Russian-EU relations and co-edited the book Russia and the European Union: Prospects for a New Relationship. In 2005-2006 Ms. Antonenko facilitated track two meetings between Georgian and South Ossetian senior officials and experts with the aim of promoting conflict resolution in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict. In 2006-2007 Ms. Antonenko directed research project on Shanghai Co-operation Organisation and Security Challenges in Central Asia.
As Senior Fellow and Programme Director for Russia and Eurasia, Ms. Antonenko oversees all IISS work on Russia, Central Asia, South Caucasus and Western NIS states. IISS Russia and Eurasia programme provides analysis of domestic, foreign and security policy issues in Russia and in other countries of the Former Soviet Union. Ms. Antonenko frequently contributes to the IISS publications, provides briefings for the IISS members world-wide, presents papers and reports at international conferences, and comments on developments in Eurasia for international press and media. Ms. Antonenko frequently travels to the Caucasus, Central Asia and Russia provides expert advice to policy-makers in the region as well as in Europe and the US on conflict resolution issues.
