Background: After joining the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1981, Michael Crawford served overseas in Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Poland and Pakistan and worked in London on the Middle East, proliferation, terrorism and security issues. He previously took a First in Jurisprudence at University College, Oxford and an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at St Antony’s, Oxford, qualified at the Bar, and worked in a commercial law firm in Dubai and Bahrain. He left government service in September 2009 and was a Visiting Fellow at the Near Eastern Department, Princeton University September-December 2009. He has previously published on Wahhabism.
