A study of the ideological parameters within which the administration of George W. Bush developed its policy towards Iraq;

An examination of the theoretical explanations of civil war, comparing them with the rise of counter-insurgency doctrine, particularly in Iraq; and

A comparative study of interventions, regime change and state building (including work on Afghanistan to 2015 and Beyond, see below).
Background: Toby Dodge has been researching the politics of Iraq and the wider Middle East for the past 15 years. In addition to his work at the IISS, he is a Reader in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Before he took up this position in 2011, he was a Reader in International Relations at Queen Mary, University of London.
Dr Dodge has carried out extensive research in Iraq both before and after regime change in 2003. He completed a PhD on Iraqi politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
Publications: Dr Dodge co-edited the Adelphi book Afghanistan to 2015 and Beyond (2011), wrote Adelphi Paper 372, Iraq’s future; the aftermath of regime change (2005), and co-edited Adelphi Paper 354, Iraq at the Crossroads: State and Society in the Shadow of Regime Change (January 2003). Articles in Survival: Global Politics and Strategy include 'The US and Iraq: time to go home’, Vol. 52, No. 2, (April-May, 2010), ‘Iraq and the next American President’, Vol. 50, No. 5, 2008, and ‘The causes of US failure in Iraq’, Vol. 49, No. 1 (Spring 2007). His other published works include Inventing Iraq, the Failure of Nation Building and a History Denied (2003) and Globalisation and the Middle East, Islam, Economics, Culture and Politics (2002).
