Research Fellow for European Security
Expertise: EU Security and Defence Policy; NATO, defence reform, strategic culture
Background: Dr Bastian Giegerich is carrying out a research project on future European security trends supported by the European Commission. He joined the IISS on a post-doctoral fellowship (2005-2006) on European defence issues funded by Compagnia di San Paolo, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the Volkswagen Foundation and has since conducted work supported by EADS, the European Defence Agency, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, and Northrop Grumman Corporation. He is also contributing to The Military Balance and the Strategic Survey. A graduate of the University of Potsdam (Germany), he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Maryland (USA), a Research Associate at the National Defense University in Washington DC and a Project Manager at the Aspen Institute Berlin. Dr Giegerich obtained his PhD at the London School of Economics, where he also taught in the Department for International Relations.
