Director of Editorial; Editor of Strategic Survey; Editor of Strategic Comments
Main responsibilities: Alexander Nicoll is Director of Editorial at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He is Editor of the annual IISS publication Strategic Survey , and of the monthly publication Strategic Comments. In addition, he heads the IISS research programme on Economics and Conflict Resolution. He co-edited with Tim Huxley Adelphi Paper 400–401: Perspectives on International Security: Speeches and Papers from the 50th Anniversary Year of the International Institute for Strategic Studies. With Bastian Giegerich, he co-authored the IISS Strategic Dossier ‘European Military Capabilities: Building Armed Forces for Modern Operations’, published in 2008. He also led the IISS European Capabilities Project, seeking new ways to define and analyse military capabilities in the light of modern missions.
Background: Mr Nicoll came to the IISS from the Financial Times newspaper, where he was Defence Correspondent from 1997 to 2002. Previously, he had been the FT’s Asia Editor and also spent three years on secondment to New Delhi as Consulting Editor of Business Standard, India’s second largest business newspaper. Among other positions at the FT, he was UK News Editor and International Edition Editor. During his earlier career with Reuters news agency, Mr Nicoll was a correspondent in Hong Kong, London, Paris, Tehran and New York. He is a graduate of St John’s College, Oxford.
