Research Assistants and Interns

A limited number of part-time research assistant positions in London, and internships in our overseas offices, are offered from time to time to graduate students in international relations and strategic studies. Research assistant and interns are assigned to a member of the Directing Staff, Senior Staff or a Research Fellow, which means that candidates require postgraduate experience in the associated field of study.

 

When considering candidate applications, the IISS is not able to offer assistance in finding accommodation, nor can it apply for work permits for these assignments.  The IISS also cannot guarantee a response to unsolicited applications in all cases. For further details, contact hr@iiss.org


London Office

  

Research Assistant for defence procurement
 

An opportunity has arisen at The International Institute for Strategic Studies, in London, for one half-time Research Assistant post to analyse global defence procurement activity.   

 

The selected candidate will work closely with Senior Fellows of the IISS Defence and Military Analysis Programme (DMAP) and, as required, with staff of other IISS research programmes.

 

The ideal candidate will combine an interest in defence procurement, and the trade in weapons and military materiel, with skills in sourcing and analysing data in print and electronic media, and the textual and graphical presentation of data in insightful and innovative ways.

 

Tasks:

 

Duties will involve:

 

  • Research into global defence procurement activity and, where necessary, the policy drivers behind programmes and technical-bureaucratic factors affecting procurement policies.

  • Information gathering, and aggregation and assessment of data, relating to global defence procurement activity. Generation and maintenance of spreadsheets (currently using MS Excel) detailing procurement activity and, when required, production of detailed analytical reports. Compilation of open source information resources, such as source lists, for wider use by Programme staff.

  • Administrative and research support for funded research projects. Assistance in seeking new sources of funding and developing new or current projects.

  • Additionally, the selected candidate may be called on to conduct research activities into military forces, policies and strategies as directed by DMAP Senior Research staff. Other duties may be directed by the Programme Director or Editor, The Military Balance, including some administrative tasks related to research activities directed by DMAP Senior Research staff.

 

Requirements:

  • Completion of or enrolment on a course of postgraduate or undergraduate study relating to strategic studies or military affairs.

  • Eligibility to work in the UK.  (The IISS regrets that it cannot assist with procuring visas or work permits).

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English. Knowledge of other languages would be an asset.

  • Experience of research using written and online sources.

  • Employment:  Temporary contract with an initial six-month period and prospect for renewal. The position is available for 2 ½ days per week for a total of around £120 per week.

Washington Office

 

Nonprofit Management Internship

 

The International Institute for Strategic Studies – US is currently seeking volunteer full-time and part-time interns to support the management of its office in Washington, DC. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, but loosely correlate to the seasons and academic terms.

 

 

To be considered for the Summer 2012 session, kindly submit a complete application no later than 1 March 2012.

 

Requirements: Successful candidates will have the following qualifications:

 

  • Be a graduate student in an MPA, MPP, or Nonprofit Management Certificate Program;
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or the equivalent from a non-US institution;
  • Be eligible to work in the US. IISS-US regrets that it cannot assist with procuring visas or entry permits.

 

In addition, an interest in international affairs is highly desirable.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Interns will support the Managing Director in the administration and operation of the IISS-US office, including financial management and accounting, legal compliance, facilities maintenance coordination, IT coordination, media outreach, development, and event planning and management. Successful applicants can expect to gain direct exposure to the work and management of a leading international think-tank.

Operations and Research Internship

 

The International Institute for Strategic Studies – US is currently seeking volunteer full-time and part-time interns to support the management of its office in Washington, DC. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, but loosely correlate to the seasons and academic terms.

  • Be at least a college sophomore in good standing or a graduate student;
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent from a non-US institution;
  • Be eligible to work in the US. IISS-US regrets that it cannot assist with procuring visas or entry permits.

 

Responsibilities:

Interns will be required to provide administrative and operational support, conduct research, and assist with event and media management. Successful applicants can expect to gain direct exposure to the work and management of a leading international think-tank. On top of the required duties, interns may also have the opportunity to engage in research for the Armed Conflict Database, focusing on conflicts in 1) Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia), Central Asia (excluding Afghanistan) and the North Caucasus; 2) Sudan (Darfur and South Sudan), the Central African Republic, and Chad; and 3) Lebanon, Syria, Israel-Palestine, Turkey, and Morocco. The interns selected for this assignment will preferably possess superior knowledge of, or research experience in one or more of the regions listed. Relevant foreign language skills are preferred, but not essential. Those who wish to be selected for this assignment should state this wish in their cover letter.
