Philip H Gordon, Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, US Department of State

Dr Gordon will deliver an on-the-record address on the strategic alignment between the United States and Europe and transatlantic cooperation on foreign policy issues. His remarks will be part of the IISS-US Policy Makers series.

Dr Gordon is Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State. He previously served as Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council, and Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Dr Gordon holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Johns Hopkins University of Advanced International Studies.

Bruce McConnell, Senior Counselor and Director, Cyber Strategy, National Protection & Programs Directorate spoke on Confronting Cyber Threats: The DHS Cybersecurity Strategy as past of the IISS-US Policy Maker Series on Thursday 27 October 2011.

Mr McConnell is Senior Counselor to the Deputy Under Secretary for National Protection and Programs Directorate at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He leads the Cyber + Strategy Team which is responsible for developing the overall cybersecurity strategy for the Department, aligned with the national strategy development by the White House. He previously served on the Obama-Biden Transition Team and worked at McConnell International and Government Futures, International Y2K Cooperation Center, and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Andrew Shapiro is the Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. Previously, he served as Senior Advisor to Secretary Clinton and was the Senior Defense and Foreign Policy Advisor during her tenure in the Senate. Mr Shapiro received a joint law and masters in international affairs degree from Columbia University. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.  Read More

Previously, he was a Program Officer for Policy Analysis and Dialogue at the Stanley Foundation, a Hitachi International Affairs Fellow in Japan at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Senior National Security Adviser and Legislative Director for Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
