On Thursday, 22 January 2009 Massimo Franco, Columnist, Corriere della Sera will deliver remarks based on the themes of his latest book, 'Parallel Empires: The Vatican and the United States – Two Centuries of Alliance and Conflict' from 5-6pm.
The struggles between moral influence and secular might have, at various times, formed complex alliances, mutual exploitation and misperceptions that delayed formal diplomatic relations between the two powers until 1984. Franco discusses historical themes including: tensions during World War I; the contact between FDR and Cardinal Secretary of State Pacelli; President Kennedy’s historic election as the first Catholic president; and the joint battle against communism during the Cold War period. In his presentation, Franco will give possible direction to the evolution of relations between the Vatican and the Obama administration.
This meeting will be moderated by Adam Ward, Executive Director, IISS-US and will take place at 1850 K Street NW, Suite 300 Washington, DC 20006. The meeting and discussion will run from 5-6pm, followed by a reception at 6pm.
