The International Institute for Strategic Studies – Asia (IISS-Asia) collaborated with ISEAS in organising a one and a half day expert workshop on 15-16 October to take stock of the evolving regional security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region. The workshop assessed recent developments in multilateral regional institutions that encompass security dialogue and other forms of security cooperation among their roles. These institutions notably include ASEAN and ASEAN-anchored forums such as the ARF and EAAS, but also diverse non-ASEAN forums such as the Shangri-La Dialogue, Six-Party Talks and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. The workshop also looked at the part played in the regional security architecture by bilateral security relationships.

Among the questions this forward-looking workshop addressed were: What roles will ASEAN and its related forums be able to play in promoting security and stability in the Asia-Pacific in the future? How might a changing configuration of major power influences affect bilateral security relations and their contribution to the regional security architecture? What are the merits of alternative visions for the regional security architecture?

In all, around 50-60 participants from East and Southeast Asia, as well as the US and Australia, including many leading experts on Asia-Pacific regional security institutions and partnerships were present for the workshop.
