8 Sep 2009 - IISS-Asia Seminar Series - Dr Ron Huisken

Ron Huisken speaks on "Banning That Bomb: Thinking about Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament".

On Tuesday 8 September 2009 Dr Ron Huisken (Senior Fellow, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University) spoke on "Banning That Bomb: Thinking about Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament".

Ron Huisken looks into the renewed determination to contemplate a world without nuclear weapons. He will offer an assessment of the considerations that will shape how the process unfolds and discuss why so many observers consider success to be highly improbable and perhaps even undesirable.

Ron Huisken joined the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University as a Senior Fellow in 2001, after nearly 20 years in government with the departments of Defence, Foreign Affairs & Trade, and Prime Minister and Cabinet.  His research interests are focussed on US security policies, the security order in East Asia, non-proliferation and arms control, and China’s foreign and security policies. Prior to his career in government, he worked at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the University of Malaya, and with the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs.  In 1995-96 he was a member of the secretariat for the Canberra Commission on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
