On 14 June 2005, the IISS organised a one-day Iran Nuclear Workshop, together with the Swedish Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC) and the Nixon Center. The workshop was attended by four WMDC commissioners: Chairman of the Commission Dr Hans Blix, Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar, Mr Marcos de Azambuja and General Vasantha Raghavan. Also attending were members of the WMDC Secretariat and distinguished experts, academics and officials from the United States, United Kingdom, Italy and France.
The purpose of the conference was to brief Dr. Hans Blix and the Swedish Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC) on Iran’s nuclear capabilities and motivations, international and regional implications if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, and prospects for various diplomatic approaches to resolve the issue, particularly the prospects of the E3 – Iran talks, as well as international and regional approaches. The results of the meeting will be incorporated into the Commission’s final report to the UN Secretary General in early 2006.
