Armed Conflict Database

The IISS Armed Conflict Database provides analysis and statistics on 20 African countries. The ACD offers regular updates, weekly timelines and annual reports on the political, military and humanitarian trends in active conflicts. The database, as well as looking at reported clashes and encounters, fatality figures, refugee flows and the role of non-state armed groups in ongoing conflicts, also examines countries in the post-conflict reconciliation stage by providing information on the progress of disarmament, demobilisation and rehabilitation programmes and truth and reconciliation processes.  The ACD enables researchers to keep up to date with developments in African peace talks, keep track of elections results in budding African democracies, and remain informed about all aspects of conflict-related violence in Africa.

China's African Challenges - cover

China’s African Challenges

Major research efforts conducted recently led to Adelphi Book (404-5) ‘China’s African Challenges’ , by Sarah Raine, which focuses on China’s changing relations with African nations over the past decade. With African oil accounting for more than 30% of China’s oil imports, and China being Africa’s second-largest single-country trading partner, as well as a leading lender and infrastructure investor on the continent, she examines associated  challenges to China and Africa. The focus is on what China needs to do to protect and develop its African engagements, against a backdrop of mounting African expectations, concerns from Western actors in Africa, and the rival presence of other emerging actors.
